 Application FAQ's

NetSCADA maintains this FAQ page as a resource to answer frequently asked questions about our products and how well they adapt to users' applications. NetSCADA also maintains a Technical FAQs page to answer technical questions about our products. Remember that detailed specifications, user configuration, and operational instructions may be found in the help files and users manuals.

What is SCADA?   To top of page

SCADA stands for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition. The acronym has been around for 30+ years. SCADA systems in years past were primarily industrial monitoring systems with limited data gathering and control capability. However, in the last 10 years technology has evolved so that many systems maintain huge historical data repositories and are the front end for implementing and viewing sophisticated controls schemes.

What is NetSCADA?   To top of page

NetSCADA is an industrial SCADA software system that is Internet capable or simply "SCADA for the Internet". NetSCADA takes advantage of the Internet's ability to connect remote users to real-time sources of process data such as PLCs and RTUs.

Are my real-time systems and data secure when they can be accessed from the Internet?   To top of page

NetSCADA deals with security on the Internet by using our Authentication and Security for Automation Projects (ASAP) technology. ASAP secure operation incorporates the latest Information Protection technology. ASAP encrypts and compresses your data transmissions and passwords. ASAP also works in conjunction with your business network firewalls and VPN resources to keep your NetSCADA Servers secure by keeping unauthorized traffic and users out of your critical systems.

Can I use a standard Web browser to view my data via the Internet?   To top of page

Yes! We recommend using Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5.0 or above. NetSCADA data when viewed in a web browser also uses ASAP secure operation to keep unauthorized traffic and users out of your critical systems.

Can I use NetSCADA when I do not have or need access to the Internet?   To top of page

Yes! NetSCADA is compatible with all of the major business networking vendor products including Microsoft and Novell. Our ASAP technology works seamlessly on these networks independent of your VPN resources inside your business network and in addition to your VPN resources when accessing a NetSCADA server from outside your corporate firewalls. NetSCADA is designed to keep unauthorized traffic and users out of your critical systems. All that is needed is a TCP/IP driver on each PC used to access the NetSCADA system.

Does NetSCADA use a Hardware Key (dongle) as copy protection?   To top of page

No! Instead of cumbersome hardware keys NetSCADA issues a software unlock key and file that identifies the owner of the software license and the machine it is installed on. These license keys are e-mailed to the license owner immediately when the product is sold. If your hard drive crashes, you change the machine you are running NetSCADA on, or if you just lose your keys, simply call NetSCADA and identify yourself. We will issue a new key immediately.

What about PLCs and RTUs, are drivers available for our systems?   To top of page

NetSCADA servers are provided with Modbus TCP/IP and Modbus serial drivers at no additional cost. If other PLC drivers are necessary, we recommend either the TOPS OPC or KepWare OPC drivers. Additionally, for a small fee we can add custom drivers for your application.

Can I use NetSCADA for real small systems with only 1 or 2 PLCs?   To top of page

NetSCADA HMI is especially designed to be installed on a standalone PC server on the factory floor or out at the plant process skid as a human-machine interface (HMI) for up to 3 Devices (Devices are PLCs, RTUs, etc). Note that NetSCADA HMI has NO TAG NUMBER LIMITS!!! NetSCADA's scaleable design allows databases, forms, applications' templates, and scripts developed for HMI to be portable to the Client/Server and Enterprise versions of the product. Remember that NetSCADA is designed to allow your application to grow with your business without expensive rework or upgrades.

How about real large systems with hundreds, or even thousands of PLCs and many clients?   To top of page

NetSCADA Enterprise is aimed primarily at the plant office, division office, or even a corporate enterprise SCADA system with many clients and distributed server processing across multiple PCs. NetSCADA Enterprise works in conjunction with a leading open source SQL database product on the market today equipping your system with the ability to handle large numbers of PLCs and clients and data. Click here to see a list of supported SQL database products.

How about medium-sized systems, say 3 to 100 PCs with only a few remote clients?   To top of page

We got you covered here also! The NetSCADA Client/Server is aimed primarily at the small office plant or field office SCADA PCs with up to 3 additional clients(note: additional client seats are optional). Typically NetSCADA Client/Server will be installed on a networked plant or field office SCADA PC for use as a SCADA node in the factory, plant, or field office.

Can I add additional clients to my existing system?   To top of page

Yes! You may order additional licenses for NetSCADA Secure Client as an optional read-write add-on for either the NetSCADA Client/Server(up to 3 additional seats) or NetSCADA Enterprise(up to unlimited additional seats). Additionally, you may order additional browser based client licenses if you have NetSCADA Enterprise with the Web Server option. We recommend using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 or above. NetSCADA Enterprise with the Web Server option also uses ASAP secure operation to keep unauthorized traffic and users out of your critical systems.

Can I access the data in my system with standard databases like Microsoft Access or spreadsheets like Excel?   To top of page

Yes! Since NetSCADA uses a standard open source SQL database, accessing data from your application is quick and easy using standard database query tools. Additionally NetSCADA makes extensive use of Windows Copy/Paste ability that allows easy copying of data from NetSCADA to applications such as Excel. Also provided is the ability to export SCADA data to a csv or tab delimited text file.

Do I HAVE to use databases like Microsoft Access or spreadsheets like Excel to create a report?   To top of page

No! However, you may chose to report through Excel or Access or any standard Windows application, if you wish. NetSCADA's open source SQL database provides an ODBC compliant data source allowing any number of Windows ODBC compliant applications access to the SCADA data for reporting purposes. Future versions of NetSCADA will have a built-in spreadsheet that you may use for creating custom reports without need for any additional applications on the PC. So, if you are tired of having to pay your current SCADA software vendor when you need access to the data in your SCADA system, take a look at NetSCADA to see how easy it is to get and use YOUR data.
